1989 Demo Cover
1990 Demo Cover
Found these old demo tapes the other day at a friend's house and was immediately reminded how much I loved this band when they were around. Back in 1989 and '90, when the majority of bands in Hollywood were still trying to be the next Motley Crue, Poison, etc...Winter Kills were looking to bands like Lions & Ghosts for inspiration. The guitar player, Josh Schwartz, I believe went on to be in both Further and Beachwood Sparks. Unless its a different Josh Schwartz. The bigger question, looking back at the band photos now is, is singer Tom Sanford in some way related to Legs Diamond singer Rick Sanford ? You can't deny there is a resemblance. But who really cares about that other than me? I know, no one. On to the music...

HA! Brings back memories. Winter Kills was great, and yes, that's Josh Schwartz who is an amazing songwriter and stellar guitar player ... then and now. They rocked the house at the Whisky and Roxy when they were in their teens. Always a fun, packed house. Yes, Josh went on to be in Further, Beachwood Sparks, toured with Tim Burgess', Charlatans U.K. (opening for the Rolling Stones), was on tour with John C. Riley as one of the Hard Walkers, and recently tours with John Cale. To catch up on what he's up to musically now, Josh has a new solo release 4/20/10, the band's called PAINTED HILLS, highly recommended, on CD or VINYL. Label is Birdsong/Parasol. PAINTED HILLS is brilliant, absolutely brilliant!

By The Way i'm lookin' for:
Rukus Rukus (1996)
Any chance???
I was sifting through some of my archives, and found a photo from a gig we did in August of 1988 at the Whisky, along with Winter Kills :) Nice to see they had some staying power and when on to greater things (we'd survived about 6 months :) If you're interested, I've got a couple marquis and event page shots.
ReplyDeleteAny chance of getting these reposted again?
ReplyDeleteI just updated the links, they should work now
DeleteCool. Thanks, man. I had most of these but not the 3 on the 2nd post. I was friends with them. Pokey (bass player) and I were good friends and I was actually asked to audition for the band when they were getting rid of their first drummer. Luckily I didn't audition because Scott (drummer) was the one meant for it. I was looking because Josh Schwartz(guitar) passed away on Thursday. All great guys. RIP Josh.
